Google reviews directly affect whether you show up in Maps results — and whether someone picks you over the business listed right below you. For local businesses in Miami, they're probably the single highest-ROI thing you can focus on.
But most business owners I talk to have no process for getting them. Here's what I tell every client to do.
Why Reviews Matter More Than You Think
- Businesses with 4+ stars get 12x more traffic from Google Maps than those with fewer stars
- 88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations
- Google's local algorithm uses review quantity, velocity, and quality as direct ranking signals
In competitive Miami markets — restaurants, contractors, law firms, real estate — the business with more positive reviews almost always wins the click.
The Simple System: Ask, Make It Easy, Respond
Step 1: Ask at the Right Moment
The best time to ask for a review is immediately after you've delivered value. For different businesses, that looks like:
- Restaurants: After a compliment from the table, when the check is dropped
- Contractors: Right after a job is completed and the customer is happy
- Service businesses: After a successful outcome or milestone
- Professionals: After closing a deal or resolving a case
Don't be shy about asking. Most happy customers want to leave a review — they just forget. A simple "Would you mind leaving us a Google review? It really helps our business" works surprisingly well.
Step 2: Make It Ridiculously Easy
The biggest reason people don't leave reviews is friction. Every extra step you add loses customers. Here's how to minimize it:
Create a direct review link:
- Go to your Google Business Profile
- Click "Get more reviews" or "Share review form"
- Copy that URL — it takes customers directly to the review form
Use that link everywhere:
- Text it to customers after a service call
- Include it in your email follow-ups
- Print it as a QR code on receipts, business cards, or table tents
- Add a "Leave a Review" button to your website
Step 3: Respond to Every Review
This is where most businesses drop the ball. Responding to reviews — positive and negative — shows Google that you're active and shows potential customers that you care.
For positive reviews: Thank them by name, mention something specific about their visit or project, and invite them back.
For negative reviews: Respond professionally, acknowledge their experience, and offer to make it right offline. Never get defensive. Future customers are reading your response more than the review itself.
Automating the Process
Once you have the system down, automate it:
- After-service texts: Use your CRM or a simple tool like Podium to automatically text customers a review request after a job is complete
- Email sequences: Add a review request to your post-service email flow
- Checkout integration: If you have a booking or payment system, trigger a review request 24 hours after the appointment
The point is to make it automatic so you're not relying on remembering to ask.
What NOT to Do
- Never buy fake reviews. Google is getting better at detecting them, and if you get caught, your listing can be suspended
- Don't offer discounts for reviews. This violates Google's terms of service
- Don't ask only happy customers. It's okay to have some 4-star reviews — it actually looks more authentic than a wall of 5 stars
- Don't ignore negative reviews. A thoughtful response to a complaint can actually build more trust than 10 positive reviews
